Why Your First Weapon Matters
In FreezeNova's Monster Survivors, the game algorithms heavily weight future treasure chests and level-up rolls based on your current inventory. If you pick a terrible weapon at Wave 1, the game will continually offer you upgrades for that terrible weapon, effectively bricking your progression. Below is the definitive ranking of the best starting weapons to pick—and which ones to avoid at all costs.
The Magic Staff
The undisputed king of the early game. The Magic Staff fires a linear projectile that innately possesses the Pierce attribute. This means a single shot can pass through 3-4 weak starting mobs (like slime and goblins), allowing you to clear paths instantly.
The Axe
If the Magic Staff is for offense, the Axe is the ultimate defensive starter. The Axe sweeps in an arc in front of your character, applying massive Knockback to anything it touches. It creates breathing room when you are getting surrounded by fast-moving early swelts.
The Short Sword
The Short Sword is a highly efficient single-target killer. It attacks extremely fast but has a very narrow hitbox facing forward. It is ranked slightly lower because it cannot hit multiple enemies effectively at Level 1, requiring you to actively aim your character's body at individual threats.
Weapons to Avoid (F-Tier)
The Dagger / Throwing Knife
Never pick the Dagger as your first weapon. It targets the nearest enemy regardless of where you are facing, but its base damage is microscopic and it has zero knockback. You will be instantly overwhelmed by Wave 3 if you rely on this to secure early XP crystals.
Ready to Evolve Your Arsenal?
Once you secure your starting weapon, you need to know exactly which passive items to pair with it to unlock its ultimate "Evolution" form.
