How to Play the Mage

Unlike the Knight who requires getting dangerously close to deal damage, the Mage is designed to engage enemies from absolute safety. Her entire kit in FreezeNova's Monster Survivors revolves around nuking the map before the horde can even cross the screen.

Abusing the +15% Area Damage Passive

The Mage's most defining feature is her baseline +15% Area Damage modifier. This multiplicative bonus is applied out of the gate, making any explosive or aura-based weapon significantly deadlier in her hands than anyone else's. Weapons that naturally hit multiple targets are virtually "double-dipping" into her passive effectiveness.

Magic Staff Positioning (The Pierce Mechanic)

Her primary weapon, the Magic Staff, fires a linear magical projectile. Its true strength lies in its ability to pierce through multiple lower-tier enemies (like the initial blue slimes or goblins). To maximize DPS, do not stand still. Continuously strafe laterally while dragging a "train" of monsters behind you, forcing them into a straight line for your staff to penetrate completely.

Best Mage Builds (Synergies)

To capitalize on the Mage's immense crowd control, your mid-game transition must completely abandon single-target weapons (like the Crossbow) and fully commit to the "Screen-Wiper" philosophy.

The Screen-Wiper Build

A build dedicated to capitalizing on her 15% Area Damage modifier.

  • Secondary AoE Core: The absolute highest priority is finding the Chain Lightning or the Plasma Gun. The Mage's passive directly buffs the explosion radius and bounce damage of these weapons.
  • Defensive Aura: Because you are frail, grab the Fire Wand or Holy Book. Combining her base passive and specific area expansion upgrades turns these protective barriers into massive map-engulfing rings of death.
  • Avoid: Fists, Swords, and Daggers. Keep your distance.

Recommended Passive Upgrades

Cooldown Reduction

Because magic weapons generally fire slower than physical ones, reducing your cooldown effectively doubles your area denial output.

Raw Damage %

The Mage doesn't need Crit as much as she needs high base damage to guarantee one-shotting minor swelts with her AoE blasts.

Area Range

Stack this on top of her passive. Her projectiles will become the size of boulders by wave 15.

Movement Speed

Essential for kiting. Since you lack the Knight's innate +10% speed, you must compensate with passive upgrades to outrun Bosses.
